Welcome to Freedom to Birth.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

My name is Abbie Kohanzad and I am a doula in Manchester. I am deeply passionate about providing positive, professional and empowering labour support, birth support, and post natal support.

Birth is a natural process which has been happening since the world began. For centuries, labouring women have been accompanied by experienced women to provide support for them.
Your body intuitively knows how to birth your baby.

There have been studies to show that a woman labours and delivers her baby more easily when she feels loved and trusts the people around her.

A doula is a source of unconditional, unwavering support and encouragement; a constant companion.

When a woman has a doula at her side, giving her unconditional emotional support, nurturing and care, it has been proven that her birth experience is more positive, therefore her postnatal physical and emotional recovery is far smoother and quicker. Fathers have also been more satisfied with the birth experience and the success rate for breastfeeding is increased.

Moreover, and very importantly, studies have shown that a doula’s mere presence can :-

  • reduce the rate of caesarean section by 50%
  • reduce the length of labour by 25%
  • reduce the need for pain relief by 30%
  • reduce epidural requests by 60%
  • 40% reduction in instrumental deliveries

These studies really press the point that a woman who feels supported, safe, and loved has a far more positive experience that a woman who is scared and unsure.

In this day and age, when a mother chooses to have her baby in hospital, she can, for a routine pregnancy, expect to see a minimum of half a dozen health care providers, from scanners, to midwives, perhaps doctors etc. There is little, if any, continuity of care. You will most likely not be able to choose your midwife who you will labour with , and due to the high demands on nhs staff, it is likely that during your labour, the staff will change and you will have someone new with you who will deliver your baby.

From what you have already read above, it is clear that having a doula present at birth can really help. The doula is the continuity that is so vital for the mother to feel secure and safe and able to birth her baby.

I believe that every woman knows intuitively and instinctively how to birth her baby naturally.
I am committed to supporting you through your birth whatever your preferences and choices may be. I will be with you as a constant companion until your baby is born, no matter where, or how long. I am there for you and your partner and your needs.

I want to be able to give you the freedom to birth; the freedom to let go and follow your instincts; the freedom to feel safe and let your body get on with its intuitive and natural process of birthing your baby.

“Birth is not an emergency. It is simply an emergence”
    Jeannine Parvati Baker

“Just as a woman’s heart knows how and when to pump, her lungs to
inhale, and her hand to pull back from fire, so she knows when and how
    to give birth.”
    Virginia di Orio

“We have a secret in our culture, and it’s not that birth is painful. It’s that
    women are strong.”
    Laura Stavoe Harm

“Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers –
strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know
    their inner strength.”
